Types of dentists

types of dentists
Did you know there are several types of dentists outside of your general dentist? What’s a general dentist anyways? A general dentist will be the dentist who performs a wide variety of services, to include cleanings, fluoride treatments, cavity fillings, x-rays and many other services. They are usually the first type of dentist you will see. In some cases, if you have other more involved dental problems, such as needing a root canal or oral surgery, you may find the need to visit any of the following dental specialists:

Orthodontist – This is probably the most well known as they are the dentist that can make your teeth straight. Many children see an orthodontist when they are young teens, but adults get orthodontia work later in life as well.

Periodontist – A special dentist that treats gum disease and will perform necessary gum surgery. They are generally the dentist that does tooth implants.

Prosthodontist – If you need replacement teeth, a Prosthodontist’s skill can give you the smile you are seeking. They have training beyond regular dental school and specialize in dentures and the maintenance of them.

Endodontist – Are often able to save your tooth when you have tooth pain that is caused by root canal problems. They have many years advanced training for their skills. According to The American Association of Endodontists: “The average endodontist completes 25 root canal treatments a week, while general dentists do about two root canals a week.” (http://www.aae.org/patients/why-choose-an-endodontist.aspx)

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon – Highly trained as experts in parts of the face, mouth and jaws. They are skilled to perform surgery, anesthesiology and emergency medicine.

Orthopedic Dentist – If you have little ones, this is the dentist you want to see. They are specially trained in working with children and their dental needs.

Cosmetic Dentist – Look to this type of dentist for brightening/whitening of the teeth and for veneers.
